About Homi Bhabha Exam

The Mumbai Science Teachers' Association conducts Dr. Homi Bhabha Balvaidnyanik Spardha since 1981 to encourage students to take interest in science, to inculcate scientific attitude and to search science talent in students. The competition is conducted for the students studying in VI and IX Std.

Dr. Homi Bhabha Exam is an excellent way to clear the science concepts and make a strong foundation for students. Dr. Homi Bhabha Exam for 6th std and 9th std also helps in preparation for IIT and NEET entrance Exam.

This competition is based on scientific knowledge acquired by the students up to std. VI and IX. respectively. This competition is conducted in English and Marathi Medium only.


What is Dr. Homi Bhabha Balvaidynanik Exam?

  1. Exam is called as Dr. Homi Bhabha Balvaidnyanik Exam or also called as Young Scientist Exam

  2. Exam is conducted by Mumbai Science Teacher’s Association.

  3. It is based on science concepts.

  4. Roughly 75,000 students appear for this Exam.

  5. Students in standard 6th or 9th can appear for this exam.

  6. Both Marathi and English medium students can appear

  7. Registration for exam with MSTA will start in June/July 2024. The last date for registration is 31st July. Students can register with school or can do individual registration.

  8. There are 4 phases for the exam.
    Written : Practical : Project : Interviews

  9. First phase - Written :
    Exam Date : September/October 2024

  10. Written is 90 minutes, 100 Marks MCQ paper. No Negative marking

  11. Cut off for 6th std written test to qualify for practical is around 60-64 marks

  12. Cut off for 9th std written test to qualify for practical is around 45-55 marks

  14. Second phase - Practical :
    Exam Date : December 2024

  15. For 6th Std.
    • There will be 5 experiments of 6 marks each based on science topics
    • Total marks 30. Duration : 30 minutes

  16. For 9th Std.
    • 1 experiment each for Physics and Chemistry
    • 10 Marks : Duration : 10 minutes
    • Biology : 10 questions based on 10 Specimens
    • 10 Marks : 10 minutes

  17. Selection for Third Phase (Projects)

    • 30% of the marks obtained in Written and marks obtained in Practical are considered.
    • Top 10 % students are selected for third phase (Projects)
    • On reaching Third phase all students will get either Gold, Silver or Bronze medal

  18. Third phase - Project : March 2025

    • Students needs to make project on topics given and submit the report.

  19. Fourth phase - Interviews : March 2025 (Tentative)

    • All the students who submit project report are called for interviews.
    • Students would be interviewed by panel of MSTA Committe.

  20. Based on marks of all phases : Gold, Silver or Bronze medal are given to students.

How to prepare for Homi Bhabha Exam ?

  10. After 30-32 papers, we do complete analysis next 15 papers are based on weak areas of the student and every student gets different set of papers based on weak areas.

  11. Student can answer paper any time/day/week. No time restrictions
